As you may have observed, the basic 335i produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. During the 335i’s 9-year run, that figure barely changed. Despite the engine modification and the transition from dual turbos to a single turbocharger.
The only exception are 335is models. BMW continued to use the older N54 engine in 335is models from 2011 to 2013. The turbo boost pressure increased by about 3 psi, allowing the 335is to produce 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
Is the 335i HP overpriced?
The 335i’s horsepower and torque statistics are typically regarded as conservative. However, it is difficult to conclude with certainty that the 335i is underestimated. The N54 and N55 engines would have to be removed from the vehicles and hooked up to an engine dyno. Otherwise, a chassis dyno measures power and torque to the wheels, which must be adjusted for drivetrain losses.
A loss of approximately 10-12% is a more realistic expectation than the 15-20% stated by some. Using the lesser assumption, the 335i still outperforms its 300hp and 300tq ratings. A typical stock 335i is seen below.
BMW 335i Torque & Horsepower Dyno
The BMW 335i is capable of producing up to 287 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Again, drivetrain losses occur, and 10-12% is a reasonable estimate for cars from this era. The dyno was performed on a DynoJet, which reads somewhat better. Still, we can approximate:
- 287whp divided by 0.88 is 326 horsepower
- 296wtq divided by 0.88 equals 336 lb-ft
This is based on a 12% drivetrain loss. If you apply a 10% loss, the 335i produces 319hp and 329tq. Not all engines and cars produce the same figures, but a factory 335i dyno should produce around 270-290whp and 280-300wtq. Finally, the BMW 335i horsepower is probably undervalued. We believe that 310-320hp and 320-330tq are more realistic.
Horsepower 335i Tuning & Upgrades
This is where the BMW 335i truly excels in terms of performance. Regardless of stock output, the 335i is capable of massive power with easy tweaking and upgrades. The goal of this essay was straightforward: to discuss the 335i’s horsepower rating of 300hp and 300 lb-ft. As a result, we won’t go into detail on tuning and mods. Instead, here’s a quick rundown of the BMW 335i’s horsepower potential:
- 350-400 horsepower with simple tuning
- Tuning plus bolt-ons: 400-500+ horsepower
- Turbo improvements range from 450 to 700 horsepower.
The 335i with stock turbos is capable of producing 500 horsepower at the crank. However, the N54 vs N55 debate is crucial here. BMW N54 engines with OEM twin turbos are more capable in general. On standard turbos, the N54 can produce up to 500whp, while the N55 produces roughly 425whp.
The point is that 300hp may appear inadequate for a 3.0 inline-6 turbo engine. The BMW 335i, on the other hand, responds incredibly well to improvements and is a very capable vehicle.

335i Horsepower 2007
The 2007 335i is the model’s inaugural year, and it produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. It does this thanks to its 3.0L inline-6 twin turbo engine.
BMW 335i HP 2008
What is the power output of a 2008 BMW 335i? The 2008 model, like the original 335i, has a 3.0 twin turbocharged engine that produces 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
2009 335i Torque & Power
Following suit, the 2009 335i produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque from the same twin turbo N54 engine.
Horsepower of the BMW 335i in 2010
With the exception of the 335is, the BMW N54 engine is no longer used in the 335i in 2010. During its first four years in the BMW 335i, the N54 had no significant changes. As a result, the 2010 335i has the same 300 horsepower and torque.
BMW 335i HP 2011
BMW updated the N54 engine in the 335i with the newer N55 engine type in 2011. It switched from a double turbo to a single twin-scroll turbo. Despite the absence of an entire turbocharger, the 2011 BMW 335i produces 300 horsepower and torque.
This was also the first year that the BMW 335is was available with the older N54 engine. The 335is produces 320hp and 332 lb-ft of torque thanks to a few minor modifications and increased boost.
BMW 335i Power 2012
Models of the 2012 BMW 335i have 300 horsepower and 300 torque. The N55 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 engine saw no significant alterations.
HP 335i Output 2013
In keeping with the trend, the 2013 335i produces 300hp and 300tq. The 335is, with 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, was likewise discontinued in 2013.
Horsepower of the BMW 335i in 2014
BMW made one significant update to the 2014 335i. Instead of the earlier pneumatic wastegate (PWG), the N55 engine began employing electronic waste-gate (EWG) regulation. EWG enables the 335i to produce higher power through aftermarket additions and tuning. The factory output for the 2014 335i, though, stays at 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft.
2015 335i HP & TQ
The BMW 335i’s final year saw no significant alterations from the previous year. Models of the 2015 BMW 335i have 300 horsepower and torque.
